Dr. Richard Silverman has joined the Bethel Health Care Center medical staff on October 8th, 2018. The partnership between Dr. Silverman and Bethel Health Care Center arose from a conversation about the need for advanced critical care and technology in the post-acute environment, more commonly known as skilled nursing.

Rich DeMio, Administrator of Bethel Health Care Center stated, “Over the years, we continue to see an increase in patients and families who come to us after a hospitalization needing pulmonary rehabilitation. We already had the foundation of a strong pulmonary program, but Dr. Silverman’s experience and his use of the latest technology will bring us to the next level.   He has been a welcome addition to our medical staff and our nurses appreciate the oversight of a specialty physician in the building regularly, and most importantly, the patients take comfort in knowing he is overseeing their care while they are with us.”

Dr. Silverman is a board-certified physician in pulmonary critical care and has been in practice for over twenty years. He is affiliated with Waterbury Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital, is a partner in Waterbury Pulmonary Associates with a satellite office in Southbury, CT and owns a consulting company called RSS Medical LLC. Critical Care Pulmonologists such as Dr. Silverman see patients experiences a new illness or chronic condition such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), pneumonia, shortness of breath, sleep apneas and other conditions of the lung and respiratory systems.

Dr. Silverman commented, “I believe the value to Bethel Health Care Center is the experience I have in treating people in all health care settings – hospital, post-acute and in the community through my practice. Therefore, I understand and can guide the clinical team on what happened prior to the patient’s arrival, the best interventions to utilize during their time in sub-acute rehab, and finally ensuring the patient is in stable condition upon their departure back to home. The patient has the comfort in knowing that when they are partially removed from their community-based physicians for a short time while at rehab, they have the confidence that there is an expert in the field overseeing their care, and if they have a pulmonologist already, everything will be communicated to them for follow up.”

Dr. Silverman and Bethel Health Care Center are currently working on trialing new technologies available for pulmonary patients at the facility. Dr. Silverman commented, “we are looking at trialing a device that provides patients non-invasive open ventilation by the end of this year. The goal of the trial should prove these patients can participate in more aggressive physical therapy and improve their lung function and breathing ability.”

DeMio concluded, “We aim as a company to be the most innovative and we believe Dr. Silverman will help Bethel Health Care Center become the center of excellence in southwestern Connecticut for pulmonary care.”
