Housatonic Habitat Offers Free Home Repairs to Local Seniors and Veterans

Housatonic Habitat for Humanity in Danbury is expanding its popular Brush with Kindness program and is looking for volunteers, homeowners and donors to help it grow.

“A Brush with Kindness is aimed at helping seniors on fixed incomes to stay safely in their homes for years to come,” says Housatonic Habitat’s executive director Diana Arfine. “We realize many senior citizens in our community just don’t have the extra funds needed to do even basic home maintenance projects. We want to help.” The program is also open to local Veterans living on fixed incomes.

Brush with Kindness is a completely FREE, volunteer-based program, available to homeowners in upper Fairfield and lower Litchfield counties. Examples of work Habitat volunteers perform include basic home repairs such as replacing broken windows or doors, fixing broken locks, repairing exterior stairs or rotted boards and exterior painting or yardwork.

“I’m excited to announce that Housatonic Habitat is expanding its Brush with Kindness initiative this year to include ADA modifications for homeowners, such as widening doors for easier wheelchair accessibility, adding grab bars and railings in halls and stairs, minor bathroom modifications and more,” says Arfine. This particular service is open to all low-income families, in addition to vets and seniors.

To apply to have work done by the Brush with Kindness program or to schedule an in-home consultation, email: info@housatonichabitat.org or call 203-744-1340. Rehab centers, senior-oriented service organizations and veteran programs are encouraged to call for more information.

Housatonic Habitat is also looking for donations of material to be used on projects, including new windows, doors, construction materials, tools and more. Volunteers are also needed. Visit housatonichabitat.org for more information on how you can help.
