Bethel artists Carol Gibson and Diana Gubbay have the medium of photography in common, so it seemed natural for the relaunched Bethel Arts to pair them in its first Arts in View event. The two-women show at the Bethel Public Library opens March 25 with a public reception from 2-4 and runs for three months.
Photographer Carol Gibson is a graduate of the New York Institute of Photography, although she considers herself basically self taught. Her most famous image is of the U.S. flag painted on six trees at the former property of the late Howard Lasher on the Newtown/Bethel border. The painted trees are a living 9/11 memorial for Lasher’s friends and colleagues who perished in the World Trade Center. It is hanging in the New York Stock Exchange, and copies are in the Utah Jazz Basketball stadium and several restaurants in the area. Other versions are hanging in schools, banks, libraries, and public offices. “My goal is to have it hang in the White House.” Said Ms. Gibson. A winter version will be in the library show.
