Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportu nity to share their story!

You’re IT Ackley Cabinets!

Three questions with Kim Kelly and Scott Ackley, owners of Ackley Cabinets.

Why did you start your business?

My father, Greg, founded our family business in 1971 in Stamford, CT as a one-man furniture refinisher. Over time, he saw the demand and consistency in kitchen cabinets. We began working together in 2009, as I had just graduated from UConn and he was open to a new direction for the family business. Hearing all our (very happy) customers say, “This is NOT refacing, you have to figure out a better way to explain your approach”, I decided to grow the company and see how many people we could help. My wife, Kim, joined the company in 2012, and she’s now overseeing all our marketing, online-presence, admin, photography and ordering. I love seeing the kitchens come together, and knowing that people are going to enjoy the cabinetry for many years.

Finish this sentence: I wish I could…

I wish I could reach all the folks thinking their only options are to rip-out their kitchen, or just glue something on the front. So many of our clients came to us feeling like they had finally found the answer to this daunting project they were considering, and I want to help other people feel the same way!
