Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Hamlin Cycles!

Three questions with Jim Hamlin, owner of Hamlin Cycles LLC.

Why did you start your business?

I started my motorcycle shop because the economic crash of 2008 took away @ half of the motorcycle shops in the US and I couldn't find a quality place to practice my craft anymore. I chose downtown Bethel because of the close proximity of the many restaurants and shops that my customers can use while they pass the time at my store, and the easy access to lower Fairfield County via Routes 53 and 58. I purchased my shop building from Mark Guss, one of the owners of Bethel Power Equipment. We regularly draw customers into my store from a 500-mile radius. Many of them use local hotels, restaurants and gas stations while visiting us.

Best selling product or service?

We sell new Moto Guzzi and Aprilia motorcycles produced in Italy, both are niche market boutique brands. We are the only Moto Guzzi dealer in CT and there is only one other Aprilia dealership in the state. We service most other brands as well. We only deal with street ridden motorcycles, we don't service ATV's, UTV's, motocross bikes, scooters or snowmobiles. We are a specialty shop, I have no interest in being a Wal Mart type of store with something for everybody. We stick to what we know and like best.

Do you use any local businesses to support your business? Can you name them?

We do regular business with Rocco's Deli, Bethel Power Equipment, True Value Hardware in Dolan Plaza, Caraluzzi's Market and Liquor stores, Smitty's Auto Body, all the local gas stations, the Car Wash across the street, Grassy Plain Pizza, Whitlocks Restaurant. Levine's Auto Parts, Danbury Competition Engines and Chemtron are all just down the road in Danbury to name a few that quickly come to mind. Applebee's in Danbury is our favorite place to pass evenings and watch sports on TV. I'm sure there are many others...
