Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story

You're IT Kathy Malatesta Photography!

Three questions with Kathy Malatesta, owner of Kathy Malatesta Photography.

Why did you start your business?

I have been a photographer since my early teens and have photographed my travels, adventures, family and friends for years. As my children have moved on to be successful adults, I decided the time was right to focus on my passion and have taken steps to share my photography with a wider audience.

As a mom, I know how you turn around one minute and your babies are going to kindergarten, to middle school, and graduating. As an educator with over 20 years of experience teaching kindergarten through high school, I know how to communicate with your clan and how to capture your authentic selves. I want you to celebrate these precious relationships with artwork that captures all of your unique personalities. Your memories deserve more than a social media post or to never be seen outside of your photos app. In fact, studies show that wall art featuring children allows them to feel connected and that they have an important place in your family. It's essential to give them a sense of belonging and a positive self-image.

Best selling product or service?

My husband and I work together to create a complete experience for our clients from consultation through wall art gallery installations. We meet to talk about your style and goals for your photo session. Perhaps you have an existing gallery that needs updating or you have a new home with bare walls and you can't decide what to use to decorate. Your session may be for your entire family, a graduating senior, or to celebrate a new addition.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

It is my great honor to have had many of my images chosen for this year's American Cancer Society calendar and promotional materials. Like many families, ours has been shattered by cancer many times. That I can turn my artwork into images that express the emotion of Greater Danbury's Relay for Life is an exercise in healing for me and I look forward to donating my images and time again on June 1.
