Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story.

You're IT Allied Home Inspections!

Three questions with Tom Schlotter, owner of Allied Home Inspections.

Why did you start your business?

I realized I was enjoying my hobby of buying, repairing, and reselling homes more than my “real” job. So I got my home inspectors license and switched careers. In addition to home inspections, I do a lot of radon and water testing for people purchasing a home.

Finish this sentence in regard to your business. “I wish I could…”

I wish I could spend more time talking to home buyers. There is a limited amount of time allocated by the sellers in order to do the home inspection, and there are lots of things to evaluate. But the most fulfilling aspect is actually talking to the buyers and educating them.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

I often bring a heating technician from Standard Oil with me on home inspections to help evaluate the heating system and fuel tanks. I use Envirocare Pest Control to help search for termites and carpenter ants on older homes.
