February Book Groups at Byrd's Books

Byrd's Book will be hosting three open to the public book club discussion in February.

History Book Group: Longitude by Dava Sobel, Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m.

Longitude is the dramatic human story of an epic scientific quest and of Harrison's 40-year obsession with building his perfect timekeeper, known today as the chronometer. Full of heroism and chicanery, it is also a fascinating brief history of astronomy, navigation, and clockmaking, and opens a new window on our world.

Book Group: The Overstory by Richard Powers, Thursday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m.

Ann Patchett calls it "[t]he best novel ever written about trees, and really just one of the best novels, period." The Overstory has received numerous awards and recognition: Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction, #1 New York Times Bestseller, Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, a New York Times Notable Book and a Washington Post, Time, Oprah Magazine, Newsweek, Chicago Tribune, and Kirkus Reviews Best Book of the Year

All Together Book Group: Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, Sunday, March 1 at 4 p.m.

This family-friendly discussion of children's books is appropriate for children ages 10 - 14. In Hatchet, 13-year-old Brian Robeson, haunted by his secret knowledge of his mother’s infidelity, is traveling by single-engine plane to visit his father for the first time since the divorce. When the plane crashes, killing the pilot, the sole survivor is Brian. He is alone in the Canadian wilderness with nothing but his clothing, a tattered windbreaker, and the hatchet his mother had given him as a present.
