Why Small Businesses Matter Reimagined

Small businesses matter - now more than ever. They are answering the call with innovation and determination like never before.

We hope you join us in supporting them by sharing their story far and wide and shopping local! We are thankful to Fairfield County Bank for their continued support and making this series possible.

Three questions with Master Mark Hoyt, owner and head instructor at Grey’s Martial Arts.

What do you want the community to know? Are there ways for the community to help you and other local businesses to prosper?

Businesses are back open and looking for you! The best way for the community to help is to get back out and visit your favorite shops, restaurants and martial arts schools. We are all taking the necessary steps to keep everyone safe in these uncertain times. And for those still nervous about being out in public, word of mouth helps out a ton as well. Social media shares, positive reviews, etc... go a long way!

Are there certain individuals or organizations that supported you and your business through this trying time?

We are lucky to have an AMAZING group of students/families who continued to train in our virtual classes and support the school during our 3-month closure. They are what kept us going during some very tough times and I couldn’t thank them enough!

As a martial arts school owner, there are worldwide groups/associations of fellow owners that were constantly helping out each other and sharing ideas. I’m also lucky to have some great relationships with some fellow school owners in surrounding towns.

Please share the ways your business is adapting to keep your customers and employees safe in addition to the standard guidelines

Safety and cleanliness are our number one concern so we made sure to define space on our mat and in our lobby to adhere to correct social distancing. We shortened classes to give extra time for students to clear out and then for us to clean and wipe down the school to be ready for the next group. We’ve also been keeping masks on while we train so the curriculum has been adapted to help our students get through their workouts with a mask on. And on top of all that, we are offering some virtual training options with some of our classes. We want everyone to feel safe and comfortable so they can escape the craziness of the outside world when they are here training.

Master Mark Hoyt would like to nominate any of his fellow plaza businesses: UK Gourmet, YogaSpace, Brushworks
