Why Small Businesses Matter
Shop small, do big things for your community
Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!
You're IT Snark Gifts!
Four questions with Janice Anderson, founder of Snark Gifts.
Why did you start your business?
It sounds kind of dorky, but I had a dream. In the dream, I was running a store named SNARK and I was selling all the same kind of stuff that I sell today and was SO HAPPY. I awoke feeling kind of bummed that it wasn’t my real life. After I bored my spouse with every detail, he said “You’re not going to let this go, so why not give it a shot?” And within a month I had a website and inventory on the way!
My favorite part of gift-giving is seeing that moment where the person just loves what you’ve given them. I get that same feeling over and over again when people tell me how much fun they have shopping on the site.
What is your best-selling product/service?
The dishtowels and mugs are the biggest sellers. There are so many designs and more coming all the time. I’m always surprised at what ends up being the big hit of the season. Last year we could not stock enough ketchup-flavored candy canes! Go figure.
How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?
Well besides all the restaurants in town literally fueling me, I am a big fan of Royal Choice Global Transportation. We’re happy to support local, so as we discover area businesses that offer things we use, we’re all ears!
Have you "reimagined" your small business?
I’ve considered a brick-and-mortar setup for the future. Maybe someday, but for now we’re really enjoying the online business.
