Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Mitchell's!

Four questions with Debra Irizarry, founder of Mitchell's, The Salon.

Why did you start your business?

I started my business to make every client have the most beautiful hair possible. I also wanted to provide a comfortable salon where each client could talk to me in confidence and allow me to provide advice and counsel.

What is your bestselling produce or service?

Being a perfectionist, I think my bestselling service is the “Color, Cut and Foil”. By providing both the most flattering color with the most stylish cut I can maximize the value of my service to each client. I will make you look the best you can be.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

I use at least 13 local businesses including Rite Aid drug store, CosmoProf, Sally’s Beauty Supply, Union Savings Bank, Frontier, Verizon, Walmart, Staples, Eversource, Costco, BJ’s, Comcast, and Sprint.

Have you “reimagined” your small business?

I have created a plan to allow hairdressers to rent stations part-time or full-time with the stylist keeping 65% of what they charge rather than having a high fixed monthly rent. Get a key, be your own boss and enjoy a beautiful salon.
