Bethel Police Department Welcomes New Chief of Police, Stephen Pugner

There is no denying that 2020 has already been a year for the books. Among many tragic events and overwhelming challenges, the Bethel Police Department has found ways to grow, adapt, and in some cases even celebrate.

Today we are proud to formally present our new Chief of Police, Stephen Pugner. Though he was promoted in July, the restrictions surrounding social gatherings have prevented a public swearing in ceremony or celebration.

Hired in 2000, Chief Pugner has worked as a Patrol Officer, Detective, Patrol Sergeant, and most recently Captain during his tenure. Chief Pugner is also a trained Accident Reconstruction Specialist and served many years on the department's Major Accident Team, including time as the team leader. Chief Pugner also served as the department's Field Training Coordinator, overseeing the training program for new officers and assisting with recruitment and hiring. Chief Pugner holds an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Naugatuck Community College, a Bachelor's Degree in Public Safety Administration from Charter Oak State College, and a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Marist College.

Our Chief bears overall responsibility for the professional, legal, and efficient operation of the Bethel Police Department. Through both his experience and education, we are exceedingly confident that Chief Pugner will continue to further the success of our department.

What a tremendous accomplishment! Congratulations Chief!
