Bethel Police Update on Reservoir Street Shooting: Investigation is Active and Ongoing

Update: February 2, 2023

Bethel police report that on January 31, 2023, at approximately 11:49 pm, the department received a call regarding yelling coming from the area of Reservoir Street. The caller reported hearing a sound of a possible gunshot, followed by yelling and then two additional gunshot sounds.

Officers say they responded to the residence on Reservoir Street where the disturbance was believed to have occurred. According to the police report, the residence is a two-family home with an upstairs apartment and a downstairs apartment. Responders made contact with the lower-level occupants of the residence, who police say were asleep at the time and were unaware that anything had occurred.

Upon making contact with the upstairs apartment occupants, police say a female was located in a bedroom with a gunshot wound to the head and a gunshot wound to the chest.

"A male victim, who was later identified as the suspect, was found alive, in the same room, with a gunshot wound to the head. The responding officer immediately began providing medical aid to both the male and female," police report. They add, "The male suspect was transported to Danbury Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The female was pronounced deceased at the scene by a responding paramedic."

Bethel police say the investigation thus far has revealed that the male and female were married and recently estranged due to domestic abuse. The female victim sought assistance thru Danbury Superior Court by submitting an Affidavit Relief from Abuse on January 17, 2023. The first report of domestic abuse was made to the Bethel Police Department on January 20, 2023, where the female reported that her husband was threatening her.  At that time, the husband was staying with family in New York State.

Bethel Police say that they took the female victim's statement at that time and made contact with New York State police requesting that they make contact with the husband and arrest him for violation of a Protective Order. New York State police arrested the husband on January 20, 2023.

The police report states that within the last week, the husband came back to Connecticut and was staying with family in Danbury. On January 31, 2023, the suspect came back to the residence, entered the home and shot the female victim once in the head and once in the chest before shooting himself in the head. No other occupants of the residence were involved or injured during the event.

The Bethel Police Department Detective Bureau is actively investigating the incident.

A final press release will be issued once the investigation is complete.
