Bethel Superintendent Letter to School Community Regarding Incident Today

In a letter today, signed by Bethel Superintendent of Schools Christine Carver and Stephen Pugner of Bethel Police Department, an incident that resulted in a lockdown at Johnson School was explained. Please read below:

Today, during dismissal, students at Johnson School reported that they had seen another student with what appeared to be a weapon. Following the District Safety and Security protocols, the school was put into lockdown and the Bethel Police Department was immediately notified. In the course of their investigation, the police were able to identify a student who was carrying a facsimile or toy gun.

Students and staff were safe at all times. We are grateful to the students for reporting the incident immediately and for the responsiveness of the staff in following district protocols.  We also appreciate the cooperation we received from parents in ensuring that the police could appropriately respond to the incident.

This is obviously a very serious incident and we will have mental health staff available to speak with your children if they would like to process the incident. We will be running a normal schedule tomorrow.   If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to reach out to either Dr. Salerno at This email address is being protected from spambots.
