Brewster Athlete Kevin Hazelwood to Attend University of Buffalo

One of New York State’s premier student athletes, Brewster’s Kevin Hazelwood, will be exchanging his Bears attire for the uniform of the Buffalo Bulls as he prepares to attend the University of Buffalo this fall.

Last week Hazelwood, a Brewster track star and cross country runner, signed a letter of intent to attend the upstate school. He was joined by family members and school personnel at the signing ceremony.

“This is a dream come true,” said Hazelwood. “I decided on Buffalo since I will become part of an outstanding program led by an incredible coach.” Both Dean Berardo, the Brewster School District’s Director of Athletics and cross country coach Joe Scelia agreed that Kevin had made the right decision. “It would have been nice if he had chosen a warmer climate like Miami, but I’m sure Kevin will excel as a Buffalo Bull,” Berardo said.

Scelia described Hazelwood as an “amazing young man who is truly dedicated to his studies as well as his athletic prowess. “Kevin will be missed here in Brewster in many ways, but we wish him the best,” Scelia added. BHS Assistant Principal Kieran Stack, a runner himself, recalled the days when Kevin was in seventh and eighth grade at the Henry Wells Middle School. “We heard so much about this ‘skinny kid’ who was setting all kinds of records,” Stack said. “Kevin might be slight in stature, but he is a giant on the track and when running cross country.”
