Due a lack of space for books, periodicals and other media as well as to try and accomadate the enormous interest in other programs they offer the public. The Trustees of the Brewster Public Library has decided to try and expand the library in order to better serve the community. They currently have a petition circulating around town to allow a bond referendum to be placed onto the ballot in November for voter approval.
The proposal is for a 2.9 million dollar bond to be approved by the voters and would basically double the size of the current library. The plan would expand the children's room and add several more public access computers along with new restrooms, storage and utility areas. There are also plans to add a large community room for programs and community events which would also be available for private rentals during off hours. A public conference room and several 2-3 person private study/tutor rooms are also in the mix. The bond would also allow the library to be able to accommodate their current programs and add several new ones. The referendum, if passed, would raise the library portion of the average homeowners tax bill from the current cost of approximately $45 per year per household to about $75 per year, an increase of $30 per year per household.
