Seven Local Businesses Fail County-wide Alcohol Compliance Check Initiative
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office announces that in partnership with the Putnam Communities That Care (CTC) Coalition, “off premise” alcohol compliance checks were conducted at retail establishments throughout Putnam County during the past three months.
Sheriff Donald B. Smith said funding had been obtained by the Putnam CTC Coalition to implement the compliance checks initiative. “Each day we see evidence of the toll underage drinking has on our communities. By conducting these compliance checks it not only makes more difficult for young people to obtain alcoholic beverages, but it reminds retail business owners and their employee’s to remain vigilant when selling alcohol to individuals that appear to be underage”.
Members of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department, assigned to the initiative, utilizing individuals under the age of twenty-one, visited eighty-eight retail “off premise” locations within the County. Sheriff Smith stated that an “off-premise” location includes grocery stores, convenience stores, delicatessens, gas stations and liquor stores and any other business that sells alcohol for consumption at another location.
Sheriff Smith reported that as of August 22, 2017, department members made seven arrests during the initiative. All of the arrests were employees of retail establishments who sold alcoholic beverages to the underage agents without checking to see if they were legally able to do so. Sheriff Smith and the Putnam CTC Coalition remind business owners that the compliance checks are ongoing and ask that they and their employees be vigilant when selling alcoholic beverages.
