Southeast Fireworks to light up the sky Sunday evening

 

This coming weekend will see numerous firework displays through out the Putnam County region and Southeast is no exception. Come to Independent Way in Brewster, NY on July 1 from 7-11 pm.

The Southeast Fireworks committee has been working diligently for months to ensure that this year's display is the best yet.  The festivities begin Sunday in Highland Plaza shopping center on Rt 312 when local band "Saving Athens" takes the stage to perform between 7:30 and 8 PM. They were headliners at last year 's event and everyone enjoyed their unique style and mix of music. There will also be a hula hoop contest and a performance of our National Anthem at 9:25 pm. by students of Spotlight Arts, a local youth performing arts company. Fireworks are scheduled to begin at 9:30.

The are also numerous areas in town where the fireworks can be seen. The Brewster Heights residents can practically sit on their front lawn as can residents of the "tree streets" area of town. Elmwood, Oakwood and adjacent streets have been known to have a good view of the extravaganza.

For those who don't mind crowds and traffic, the Highland Plaza shopping center has several different dining options to enjoy while viewing the show. Deciccos, AppleBee's, Gaetano's Pizza and Everyeady Diner are a few and there is a Dunkin Donuts on site.

This year's sponsors include Carmel WinWater, DeCicco's, Coco Nails (also located in Higlands Plaza) and Durante Rentals. Lisi's Towing of Brewster provides the flatbed trailer for use as the stage and the sound engineers are K Bays Sound Concepts who graciously donated their time and talents for the event again this year.

This is the sixth year that the Fireworks have been financed by private donations and an all volunteer committee since the Town of Southeast stopped holding the event (and financing it due to budget concerns) in Scolpino Park. All of the volunteers put in numerous hours planning everything from traffic and security concerns to who will Emcee the event. All for the sole purpose of celebrating our nations birth and to bring Southeast/Brewster and the surrounding communities together.

Anyone wishing to attend can take Rt 312 to the site. From I-84 use exit 19 to access the shopping plaza. Anyone wishing to take Metro North Railroad can take the train to the Southeast Station where a free trolley will shuttle riders to the venue.

The weather at this time is expected to be beautiful with sunshine all day and temperatures in the 90's so bring sunscreen, a lawn chair and a great attitude and enjoy the free 6th Annual Southeast Fireworks show and concert.
