Locals Fighting Cancer at Brewster Relay for Life Kick Off

Brewster Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society began its 2018 kick off this past Thursday evening. January 25, 2018, at Temple Beth Elohim on Mt Ebo Rd. The evening was hosted by Brewster Team leaders Rose Aglieco, Tina Aulabaugh and Kate Corsitto along with the local American Cancer Society Representative Katie DiVenuto. They welcomed approximately 100 participants, volunteers and their guests with a short slide show and refreshments. Presenters spoke about the importance of Relay for Life and its significance in their lives and in the community.

The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service.
Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and is staffed and coordinated by volunteers in more than 5,200 communities and 27 countries.

Relay for Life is a team fundraising event where team members take turns walking around a track or designated path. Each event is 6-24 hours in length and each team is asked to have a member on the track at all times to signify that cancer never sleeps.

Each team sets up a themed campsite at the event and continues their fundraising efforts by collecting donations for food, goods, games, and activities. This money will count towards their overall team fundraising goal. Teams also fundraise from now through the event on June 2nd in various ways. Keep an eye out for local fundraising efforts such as bake sales, t-shirt sales, car washes, movie days and tag sales. Raffles are held with items donated by local businesses who partner with the team or the Relay of Life event itself. Brewster Relay for Life's goal this year is to raise $100,000 for cancer research and patient support.

More then 75 local residents, teachers, parents, students and business leaders are currently registered to participate among the 21 registered teams this June 2 at Brewster High School. The event runs from 5 pm until midnight. There will be games throughout the evening at various team tent sites along with main stage professional entertainers.

Help this year's Relay for Life by joining a team, creating a team of your own or donating your time or money. To help in the fight against cancer contact, Katie DiVenuto at katie.divenuto@cancer.org or call 914-397-8865.
