Putnam Service Dogs provides free Service Dogs and follow-up support services to people with physical disabilities other than blindness. They currently have 6 dogs in training, and 13 applicants waiting for their Service Dogs. They adopt carefully chosen, mixed breed pups from Rescue Organizations, to raise and train as their Service Dogs. Most of their applicants use a wheelchair. They need their Service Dog to do such tasks as retrieving dropped items, opening and closing drawers and doors, turning lights on and off, pushing elevator buttons, etc. Each dog is uniquely trained for the specific tasks the person it’s matched with needs it to do.
