Cooking for Vets at Camp Herrlich

Cooking For Vets Program

Carmel Rotary Club and Camp Herrlich present Cooking for Vets, a program where local chefs, community members, and Veterans all come together for a great night of community, cooking, eating, and camaraderie.

On May 7th, 2019, 6 Rotarians from the Carmel Rotary Club, 4 Camp Herrlich staff members, and 9 local Veterans congregated in the Camp Herrlich kitchen with Chef Kris Birchard. Chef Kris had delicious, simple foods and recipes including pizza grilled cheese, chili, fruit cobbler, and mini egg casseroles.  She demonstrated the recipes and explained every step as the Veterans watched, participated, and sampled the food.  Participants took home copies of the recipes, along with a baggie of all the spices needed to cook their own chili at home.  The food was delicious, the vibe was fun, and everyone learned something new about cooking.

Chef Kris is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY.  She started as a roundsman at Island Mermaid in Ocean Beach NY and within 5 years became the Executive Chef.  She joined the team at Fishkill Farms in 2018, overseeing the Farm Store, PYO Staff, bakery, and grill.

This series of programs is funded by the Carmel Rotary Club with generous support from a Rotary Foundation grant.  Space, equipment, and expertise are provided by Camp Herrlich, and John Bourges from the Mental Health Association’s Joseph P. D Vet2Vet peer support program and Karl Rohde from the Putnam County Veterans Service Agency were in attendance to connect everyone together.  There is one more session of this program on May 21st, 2019.  For more information, please contact Scott Riches, Program Director at Camp Herrlich, by calling 845-878-6662 x306 or e-mailing sriches@campherrlich.org
