The internationally acclaimed drummer Mike Clark, will join the Arts on the Lake Jazz Ensemble for their Summer Concert Series performance, Jazz Rock of the 70s, at Arts on the Lake on June 19th at 7 PM. Clark gained worldwide recognition as one of America’s foremost jazz and funk drummers while playing with Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters.

His playing on Hancock’s album, “Actual Proof” garnered him an international cult following and has influenced generations of drummers since its release. Hancock stated “so many people have remarked about that solo, saying, how ‘Incredible’ it was.” Clark has continued to alter the jazz rock scene more recently with his duo, The Wolff and Clark Expedition, whose songs have hit the top of the Jazz radio charts.

The 11 member Arts on the Lake Ensemble, led by arranger, composer and trumpeter Tim has put together an ode to the music genre that fused elements of rock and funk. Ouimette related, “Following the rise of Rock ‘n’ Roll and funk in the 60s, jazz musicians started to incorporate the strong rhythmic groove and electrified sound that dominated these trends that led to the Jazz Rock era. We will explore the works of Blood Sweat and Tears, Chicago, Steely Dan, and others who pioneered this sound and we are so lucky to have the iconic Mike Clark join us for this journey.”

Members of the Ensemble are established jazz professionals who have played with luminaries including Harry James, Joe Cocker, Lou Rawls, Eubie Blake, Gregory Hines, Ray Charles, Blood Sweat and Tears, Bill Frisell, Count Basie, and Iggy Pop.

Led by arranger, composer and trumpeter Tim Ouimette, the Ensemble brings a musicianship that one rarely gets to hear.  Members of the group have played with: Harry James, Joe Cocker, Lou Rawls, Eubie Blake, Gregory Hines, Ray Charles, Blood Sweat and Tears, Bill Frisell, ount Basie, and Iggy Pop.

The concerts are outdoors on the north lawn at the Arts Center. Bring lawn chairs or blankets and you are welcome to bring food and beverages. Refreshments and some picnic food will be available for purchase.
