Playwright, poet, director, and teacher Tony Howarth will headline Saturday Scribes’ March 14th gathering. As usual, the program will be held from 7-9 p.m. at the Studio Around the Corner, 67 Main Street, in Brewster, New York.
The night will begin promptly at 7 with an Open Mic, followed by the headliner. Though participation is not required, attendees are encouraged to bring flash fiction, book excerpts, poems, and songs to share with the group.
Tony Howarth is no stranger to Saturday Scribes events, having shared his material at previous meetings. Audiences have responded enthusiastically to his witty and timely poetry and social criticism.
Howarth’s poems have appeared in Chronogram, Chantrelle’s Notebook, Drown in My Own Fears, Tiger’s Eye, The Naugatuck River Review, andPrompt Literary Magazine. His poetry has also been published in the British magazine, Obsessed with Pipework. His chapbook, As the Glider Glides, was published in 2013 by The Last Automat Press.
Theatre credits include a dozen one-act plays; full lengths include Thornwood, produced off-Broadway, across the U.S., Europe, and Tanzania. It was made into an award-winning indie film, Slings and Arrows. Other plays include Sundown (produced in Sonora, Calif.); Dream City Twosome (performed off-Broadway), and Billy Bubblehead (produced at the Axial Theatre, Pleasantville, N.Y.).
In addition to the musical, Troll-Loll-La!, Tony Howarth has written book and lyrics for two other musicals, Dream, based on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Glimmer of a Dream.
For many summers Howarth directed with the College Light Opera Company in Falmouth, Mass. As playwright-in-residence at the Mint Theatre, New York City, from 1991 to 1995, he conducted a playwrighting workshop. Currently, he runs the workshop at Arts on the Lake, in Kent, New York. He is a past editorial writer and features editor for The New York World-Telegram & Sun. For 28 years he taught English and ran the theatre program at Woodlands High School in Westchester.
