Longtime Putnam County Judge James Reitz Passes Away.

Judge James Reitz, a longtime Putnam County Judge, passed away earlier this morning from what authorities said was heart attack. Judge Reitz was on the bench this morning when he suddenly collapsed. Emergency Personnel and Court Officers responded and performed CPR on the Jurist along with using the available Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Judge Reitz was rushed to the hospital where he passed away a short time later, according to reports.

Reitz and his wife Barbara were Mahopac residents. He has served as a Putnam County Court judge since 2007. He was also an acting justice with the state Supreme Court as well as being a lawyer in private practice from 1991 to 2006. He also had served as a Carmel Town Justice from 1996 to 2006.

Putnam County Executive Maryellen Odell issued a statement a short time later on the Putnam County Website which read:

“I am deeply saddened to report the passing of the Honorable James F. Reitz, Putnam County Court judge, this morning.

As many of you are aware, Judge Reitz was a cherished member of the Putnam County judiciary and the beloved husband of former long term Putnam County employee Barbara Reitz.

We will provide more details as they become available. At this time, we would ask that you please keep Barbara and the family and friends of Judge Reitz in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate through this difficult time”.

Former State Senator Terrence Murphy posted a statement on his Facebook page as well,

"Putnam County lost a giant today. In my life, I have met few people of greater character, loyalty, and dedication than Judge James Reitz. His Drug Court Program, which will be his legacy as a public servant, should be a model for New York State. Judge Reitz was the ultimate public servant, but more importantly, I am proud to say he was a true friend. My heart goes out to all who had the privilege of knowing him, and of course, his incredible wife Barbara."

In 2016,  Reitz was named the recipient of the Sid Gibson IMAGINE Award, in recognition of his dedication to the well-being of youth, adults and families in the Putnam County community.

The Reitz Family issued this statement:

“It is with profound sadness that the Reitz family confirms the unexpected death of the Honorable James F. Reitz this morning,” “The Reitz family respectfully requests that all refrain from visiting the home until family has been contacted and service arrangements have been made. Once funeral arrangements are made, subsequent notice will be provided.”

The Honorable James Reitz was also a member of several local Civic organizations including the Rotary Club of Carmel and the Knights of Columbus - Our Lady of the Lakes Council #6318 in Carmel.

Funeral Arrangements are pending.
