Brewster High School’s Mu Alpha Theta has been hard at work collecting pajamas and books for local children in need. The club recently finished its annual drive for Pajama Program, a non-profit that “promotes and supports a comforting bedtime routine for all children to help them thrive.”
“We’ve been doing this for years,” said Mu Alpha Theta President Meaghan Feehan. “We collect new pajamas and new children’s books over the course of a month. All of our collections go to families in need for kids who don’t have pajamas.”
This year, the club collected 39 pairs of pajamas and 30 books.
“They inspire donations by talking about it at their monthly meetings,” said club advisor Deirdre Holic. “Once we get all of the donations, we organize them and make sure we have two or three for every size for both boys and girls. Wherever we’re lacking, we take Mu Alpha Theta’s funds and shop for the missing pieces.”
According to Donna Rossomando, co-president for the Putnam County chapter of the Pajama Program, donations stay in Northern Westchester or Putnam County and go to Headstart programs, the Department of Social Services, Open Door, a foster home, a domestic violence center and several other agencies that support children.
Mu Alpha Theta’s Pajama Program drive is just one example of the ways Brewster students demonstrate civic responsibility, one of the essential skills contained in the district’s Profile of a Graduate. The Profile of a Graduate grew out of the Strategic Coherence Plan and contains six essential skills.
