More Than 200 Brewster High School Seniors Register to Vote

At the end of February, the Putnam County Board of Elections visited Brewster High School. Partnering with social studies teachers, they helped more than 200 seniors register to vote.

Students gathered in the Innovative Learning Center at Brewster High School, following step-by-step instructions as members of Putnam County’s Board of Elections showed them how to fill out each piece of voter registration forms. Before students left the presentation, Board members double-checked forms for handwriting accuracy and made sure nothing was left out.

“We started registering kids in class over 25 years ago,” said Rob Gallacher, the Brewster High School social studies teacher who coordinated the event. “It's always been something we did in Participation in Government classes. We started having the town clerk come to introduce the process of voting about 20 years ago.”

The Board of Elections has been visiting Brewster High School for three years now.

“It's very important that students understand their responsibilities and rights,” Gallacher said. “We are giving our students a voice in our society.”

The annual event is one that teaches students civic responsibility, one of the essential skills of the district’s Strategic Coherence Plan.
