Brewster’s Andrew DiFabbio is a National Merit Scholarship Program Finalist

Brewster High School senior Andrew DiFabbio was named a 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program finalist last month. Andrew is one of more than 15,000 students nationwide to advance in the competition. The pool of finalists will be considered for this year’s National Merit Scholarships.

“All winners of Merit Scholarship® awards (Merit Scholar® designees) are chosen from the finalist group based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments,” according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Students are evaluated on factors that include “the finalist's academic record, information about the school's curricula and grading system, PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index score, the high school official's written recommendation, information about the student's activities and leadership, and the finalist's own essay.”

Finalists compete for three types of scholarships in the spring: National Merit $2500 Scholarships, corporate-sponsored awards, and college-sponsored awards.

An active member of the Brewster community, Andrew has been in school plays and has been a member of the marching band, Model UN, the Math team, Men’s Choir and Boy Scouts.

Although he hasn’t selected a college yet, Andrew hopes to study physics and math.

“I plan to be involved in research as an undergraduate,” he said.
