Local Youth Perform in Socially Distanced 'FOOTLOOSE' at Wells Park in Brewster

Spotlight Arts is now holding video auditions for its highly anticipated fall mainstage production of THE ADDAMS FAMILY

Spotlight Arts Inc., a nationally recognized youth theater company based in Brewster, held a weekend of outdoor, socially distanced performances at Wells Park in Brewster for its summer mainstage production of FOOTLOOSE. The cast featured local young performers throughout Putnam, Dutchess and Westchester counties, ranging in age from 9 to 22. Cast members were socially distanced during the performances through strategic staging, including Spotlight Arts’ creation of “mask-ography” that was implemented in all scene transitions. The creative team even incorporated a pandemic into the plot of the storyline to blend the performers' storytelling with the many safety precautions that were maintained both onstage and offstage. Prior to show week, the cast learned their vocals, staging and choreography for the entire show virtually through rehearsals on Zoom for a full month. Performance spectators were socially distanced throughout the open field of the park while enjoying the performances from assigned lots where they brought their own chairs, blankets and picnics.

About FOOTLOOSE: When Chicago teenager Ren McCormack (Anthony Velez of Carmel, NY) moved to small farming town Bomont with his mother Ethel (Megan Griffin of Brewster, NY), he finds himself at odds with most of the town. He isn’t prepared for the many changes from city life, including a ban on dancing. He befriends Willard Hewitt (Bobby Galletta of Wappingers Falls, NY), a country hick who becomes his best friend, and the rebellious Ariel Moore (Katie Abt of Bedford, NY), who wants to escape from the strict rules of her father, Reverend Moore (Spencer Hall of Bethel, CT). When they ask the Town Council for permission to hold a graduation prom, the conflict between the town’s teenagers and parents grows, until they must choose sides between tradition and change. And in the process, Ren helps the town to heal from a tragedy that affected them all.

The rest of the talented cast included Jazzy Cores of Mamaroneck, Sophie Abt of Bedford, Maureen Henshaw and Rowan McGlynn of Carmel, Sam Corry of Holmes, Gillian Anderson, James Hartigan, and Annie Sullivan of Patterson, Olivia See of Mahopac, Dana Cohen of Somers, Lindsay Canavan of Purdys, and Tessa Boissonault, Aidan Loeffel, Rebecca Loeffel, Ella Moran, Brandon Salamone and Autumn Takacs of Brewster, NY.

Returning to the Spotlight Arts creative team for this mainstage production was direction by Spotlight Arts Executive Director Stephanie Scuderi, choreography by Eric Leiggi, and music direction by Denis Michael Rudisch. The production was assisted by Sarah O’Hara, and stage management by Sierra Cervantes and Taylor Byrne.
