Maloney Urges Hudson Valley to Return 2020 Census Before September 30 Deadline

Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) encourages all New Yorkers to return the 2020 Census by mail, phone, or online., prior to the September 30th deadline

“Filling out your Census is one of the most important things you will do this year. An accurate count is vital to securing the resources and federal funds we need to recover from this pandemic and build back better than before.

“Right now, Census response rates are at the lowest rates in recent history, and the pandemic has made it difficult for Census takers to do their jobs. The recent decision by the Trump Administration to slash the original 60-day extension down to 30 days will only compound that problem - making it harder than ever for us to get an accurate count.

“It is up to each and every one of us to ensure the Hudson Valley responds to the Census and gets counted. These are high stakes, and we need a strong showing,” said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney.

New York’s 18th Congressional District currently has a 66.2% response rate, which is slightly higher than the national response rate. Several communities across the Hudson Valley still have a response rate at or below 50 percent, including Newburgh, Brewster, Unionville, Poughkeepsie, Tuxedo Park, and Greenwood Lake. This could result in possible undercounting in the region.

Pandemic-related limitations on travel for Census takers and Census employees required a 60-day extension of the deadline to October 31, 2020, but the Trump Administration recently cut that extension by 30 days to September 30. New Yorkers can by respond to the Census by mail, online or by phone. Information on Census survey methods was mailed to Hudson Valley homes in the spring, and can also be found on the Census Bureau website: www.2020census.gov.

The U.S. Constitution requires the Census Bureau to count the number of people living in America once a decade. The federal government and communities across America rely on census statistics for accurate congressional representation and districting, determining where to build new schools, businesses and hospitals, and allocating federal grant funds and loans to communities in need.
