On September 8, Brewster High School’s Bubbly Bears Laundry Service was presented with the Champions of Change award from the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA). The award celebrates programs that optimize resources to address issues of equity, demonstrate strong student academic performance and introduce unique learning environments that are cutting-edge and future-oriented.
The Bubbly Bears is one of a few businesses run by students and staff in the Career Skills program. Though things will look different this year due to COVID-related restrictions, students typically wash, dry and fold laundry for the whole district — from uniforms and gym pinnies to rags and extra clothes. Last year, the Bubbly Bears also partnered with community organizations like Ann’s Place, a local non-profit that provides free cancer support services.
“It is nice to be honored and recognized for the work we do with our Career Skills students,” said Schneider, Paes Lab teacher and internship coordinator for the program. “It's especially meaningful when it is recognized by organizations outside of our district. Anyone who knows Sarah and myself knows we do it for the students, not for the accolades. We truly believe each of our students can be a productive participant and our job is to find the ways they can.”
Barnes echoed Schneider’s sentiments saying, "We are honored to have our students’ work recognized. The connections made in the school and the community have been so valuable and meaningful. I am proud to be part of such a wonderful program."
