Brewster High School Career Skills Students Give Back

November 13 was World Kindness Day, a globally acknowledged day to promote the importance of being kind to each other, to yourself, and to the world. To celebrate, the Career Skills class at Brewster High School gave back to the community in a big way.

The class sold well over 200 three-ply cotton masks declaring “Bears choose kind” to teachers and staff members throughout the district.  Students carefully packaged each order with colorful beads that can be used to adjust the masks’ size.

Proceeds from the sale allowed the Career Skills staff to shop at locally-owned grocery stores to fill the Little Free Pantry located at 10 Park Street. The food pantry was started earlier this year by Brewster High School junior Nora Paladino to help the community’s food insecure. Students will visit the pantry on three separate dates before Thanksgiving to make sure it is full.

Because the mask sale did so well, the class was also able to donate to the Humane Society and partner with Friends of Karen to buy holiday gifts for four local families with children suffering from cancer.

“With a little help, we can all make a difference in the lives of our friends and neighbors,” said Career Skills teacher Sarah Barnes.
