Fi-Fi-Fo-Fum, Broadway here they come!

C.V. Starr Intermediate School debuted “Jack and the Beanstalk”--its first musical ever--this week and it was a GIANT success. Of course there was Jack and his mother and a golden goose and a character dressed like Elvis called Strum Along and a giant, but there were also folk songs and dancing and drama.

Students have been working since February practicing lines, learning songs, and becoming dancers.

“Without me, Jack wouldn't have been able to climb the beanstalk,” said third grader Nina Waters who played the part of Polly the Magic Lady.

“Well I did ‘the beanstalk dance’ and without me, the beanstalk wouldn’t have grown,” said third grader Clara Mcconnell.

“He definitely wouldn’t have been able to climb the beanstalk without me,” said fellow third grader Noelle Gecaj, “I am on stage crew and I made the beanstalk!”

A village of students–63 in total–and teachers and staff came together to make this production come to life.  It started a few years ago when Sara Goetschkes, who ran the drama club and Allison Kilroy, who ran the dance club, had the idea to combine the two clubs to put on an all school production.

Principal Maggie Andriello was enthusiastically on board, Joelle Schwartz assisted with the production, the District’s K-12 Performing Arts Coordinator, Patty Taylor, welcomed the show with open arms along with Ann Marie Chalmers, Brewster High School’s PAC liaison, who even recruited some high school theater students to work with C.V. Starr stage crew to show them the ropes.

“It has been a wonderful experience,” said Goetchkes.

As it is an adaptation of “Jack and The Beanstalk.” there were some twists. The cow, which was cast for two, a back and a front, made for some funny bits.

“I was Mr. BooBoo Head, the back side of the cow,” said Warren Keith, “I didn’t want to go to the chop shop so I ran away.”

And I was Miss BooBoo Head, the front side of the cow, said Mia Moundroukas, the more responsible one, so I decided to stay with Jack.”

“And I loved being Jack’s mom, “ said Emma Delacruz, “ I was moody and mean and yelled at Jack a lot–like moms in the old days.”
