Brewster High School Girls Ski Team Takes First Place in Section 1 Competition

February 14th was a memorable day for three Brewster High School girl’s ski team members.  Seniors, Sophie Lester and Keegan O’Connor, as well as sophomore, Charlotte Greene, took the High School Section 1 Team State qualifying title at Hunter Mountain, NY.  Sophie also medaled with the bronze in slalom and bronze for Skimeister, the skier with the best all-around performance in the two slalom and two giant slalom runs in the competition.

There were 61 female skiers competing from 23 different high schools in Putnam and Westchester counties ranging from Bronxville, Mamaroneck, Rye and Scarsdale, to Peekskill, Fox Lane and Horace Greeley. The Section I winners will compete next at the New York State Skiing Championships scheduled for Monday, February 26th and Tuesday February 27th at Bristol Mountain in Canandaigua, NY just south of Rochester, NY.

Coached by Michael Bellucci and training daily at Thunder Ridge in Patterson, NY, the girls are excited to have captured the opportunity to race at the state-level event as a team.  In 2017, the trio missed the opportunity by less than a 10th of a second.

Macie Marinich, a freshman on the Brewster team, was slope - side supporting and cheering on the squad and is a hopeful to qualify for sectionals next winter.

Additional racer qualifying for the sectionals race and competing from Brewster was another senior, Chris McCarthy, representing the Brewster High School Boys Ski Team and finishing quite strong among a pack of

60 highly-competitive male skiers.  Many of the skiers are also on club ski teams and train several nights a week and weekends.  Although it was bitter cold early in the ski season and sprinkled with many rainy skiing days for these athletes , February 14th was sun-filled with mild temperatures and just enough snow to cover the ice patches at Hunter Mountain.
