Congratulations to Brewster Resident, Evelyn Cohen on receiving the “Julian Y. Bernstein Distinguished Service Award”

Congratulations to Mrs. Evelyn Cohen on receiving the “Julian Y. Bernstein Distinguished Service Award” for her volunteer work at Temple Beth Elohim.

Every spring, the Westchester Jewish Council honors deserving member organizations and their leaders with the Julian Y. Bernstein Distinguished Service Award (DSA). Julian Y. Bernstein was a former Westchester Jewish Council board member, who was a visionary communal leader. Julian believed that doing tzedakah was just as important as giving tzedakah. In tribute to his passion and devotion to the Jewish community, we honor those who follow in his footsteps. Member organizations are invited to nominate an honoree from within their organization whose dedication and leadership has enriched our Westchester community.

Evelyn, who has been a Brewster resident since 1969 and member of Temple Beth Elohim since 1970 received 5 nominations from fellow members of the temple for this prestigious award. Since receiving a warm welcome to the temple from Rabbi Acrish and fellow members, Evelyn, has served as the president of the sisterhood, organized breakfast for the High Holy Days, joined the choir, taught religious and Hebrew School, organized Temple Hanukkah parties, volunteered at bingo, and volunteered in the Judaica shop.

As a member of the temple for many years, Evelyn has had the pleasure of watching the temple grow and created many fond memories along the way. Her children’s Bar and Bat Mitzvah, standing at the Bimah as her children and grandchildren were signing I love you and giving her the thumbs up. Volunteering at the Temple is something that comes naturally to Evelyn, the sense of community and belonging allows her to give back to the temple that has provided so many fond memories and acceptance of her and her family.

About Temple Beth Elohim
Temple Beth Elohim, "House of God", is a Reform synagogue. While Reform in orientation, the Temple practices liberal Judaism within an atmosphere that is warm and traditional. The Temple, which is affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism, strives to be a center for religious observance, for Hebrew and cultural education, and for family and social life.
Temple Beth Elohim is open year-round to its congregants and many visitors. A celebration of each of the holidays on the Jewish calendar enables the congregation to experience and become part of the history and traditions of Judaism, to share these with friends and neighbors, and to strengthen Jewish identity. For members drawn to activity and service, there are ample opportunities for doing mitzvot for the Temple and our community through our Sisterhood, Men's Club, and Youth Groups.
