Local Girl Scout Troop Attends 56th Annual West Point Camporee

This past weekend of April 27th, the local girl scouts of Troop 1435 attended the 56th Annual Scout Camporee at the United States Military Academy at West Point. The girls camped for two nights at Bull Hill and learned different military skills, taught by the cadets who attend West Point year round and must know these skills for combat.

In order to be able to attend this camporee, the troop must apply to be chosen by a lottery. Scouts from all across the area apply, and only a certain amount are selected. Nearly 6,000 boys and girls are selected each year.

Troop 1435 hiked roughly three miles to get to their campsite, all while carrying their supplies for the weekend. These supplies included tents, food, clothing, tarps and backpacks filled with other necessities. Although it was challenging at times, Troop 1435 completed the trek with a smile and a feeling of accomplishment.

The next day consisted of different activities and challenges that would teach the scouts new skills and test their ability to perform them. The day began with Personal Training, which consisted of army crawling through the mud and human wheelbarrows. The days activities and challenges included fire building, first aid, land navigation, camouflage, rescuing hostages, wilderness survival and drill.

These activities teach the scouts perseverance, determination, divergent thinking, and teamwork. The scouts walk away from this event with new skills, new found confidence, and plenty of new memories.
