Letter to the Editor: I deserve a chance to have my vote count!

To the Editor:

I couldn’t get out to vote because I was in basement trying to stay safe from a possible tornado. I deserve a chance to have my vote count!

Please email Commissioner Elia (commissioner@nysed.gov) and cc the Board of Education (Boe@brewsterschools.org).

Here is a form letter you can use:

Dear Commissioner Elia:

This past Tuesday, May 15th, the school district in Brewster held a budget vote. However, at about 4:30 pm the weather channel issued an emergency alert stating our town as well as the surrounding areas were going to be hit by a tornado. That evening, 5 tornadoes destroyed homes, created power outages for over 28,00 people and tragically took the lives of four people.

For this reason, many residents within the town of Brewster sought shelter or were stranded at work due to the Metro North Railroad suspending service and were unable to vote that evening. Unbeknownst to me, the election went on as scheduled, despite the torrential rain, wind and tornados.

I ask that you allow the voters within the Brewster Central School District another opportunity to vote for the school budget because we were cheated out of this opportunity on May 15th. I also ask that legislation amends the voting hours in the future in the event an emergency happens again.

Thank you for your consideration.

Your truly,
YOUR NAME

Thank you,

Melissa Nesbitt
