Letter from Superintendent of Schools Explanation About Safety at Brewster High School

Dear Brewster Community,

It has been brought to the attention of the District that concerns have been raised in the community and/or on social networks with regard to students who may have been involved in criminal activity outside of school, who have returned to Brewster High School to complete their education. While we are not permitted to share personal and confidential information about any particular student, we can share how we work with those students who have been arrested and/or convicted of a crime who wish to return to our schools after serving any court-imposed punishment.

  • Students are not returned to Brewster High School if there is evidence that the student may engage, or continue to engage, in violent behavior.

  • A readmission meeting takes place with administrators, parents, school counselors and the student to provide information about required interventions such as weekly meetings with a probation officer, drug rehabilitation and outpatient care provided by local agencies.

  • A threat assessment is conducted to determine if the reason for the arrest places students and staff in Brewster High School in danger. The student’s disciplinary record is reviewed to determine if any acts of violence were committed on school grounds. The School Resource Officer, administrators, teachers, counselors and others participate in this threat assessment.

 When the student returns to school, regular meetings occur with a school counselor. Other members of the clinical team (psychologist, social worker or mental health counselor) may be involved if needed.

  •  The School Resource Officer and administrators exercise vigilance and monitor the student’s progress. If needed, the SRO and administrators may obtain permission from the student’s parents to speak with the probation officer and outside agencies working with the student.

    • Students, like adults, sometimes exercise bad judgment that can lead to serious consequences. Our goal is to provide our students with the appropriate resources and guidance to help them redeem themselves and complete their education. We do so always with the safety and welfare of our entire student body and staff in the forefront of our minds.
