Brewster High School’s Literary Magazine Receives National Recognition

Brewster High School’s literary magazine, Ursus, is celebrating an exciting achievement. Last year’s edition earned a rank of “Nominated for REALM First Class” by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) in its Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) contest.

“The mission of NCTE’s REALM Program is to publicly recognize excellent literary magazines produced by students with the support of their teachers,” said NCTE Executive Director Emily Kirkpatrick. “REALM is designed to encourage all schools to develop literary magazines that celebrate the art and craft of writing.”

Three hundred and fifty eight schools across the United States, Canada, the Virgin Islands, and American schools abroad entered the contest and Ursus was one of 41 to receive this award. Scoring between 93 and 100 points out of a possible 100, the publication was just shy of receiving the top honor.

The literary magazines were scored on a variety of criteria: from content and quality to rhetorical variety, editing, artistic quality, and front matter.
