Brewster High School's Mu Alpha Theta Celebrates Celebrates Pi Day

Happy Pi Day 3.14! ... Pi (the Greek letter) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. And what better way to celebrate than with piece of PIE! Mu Alpha Theta of Brewster High School is having their "Pi Sale" tradition during lunch today. The honor society provides students with information about the history of Pi and decorate the area for the celebration. Funds collected go to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Student can buy a slice for a dollar or they can earn a coupon in their math class for a free slice of pie. Math Teachers choose how to award these coupons by having students earn a coupon by participating today, helping others, or a variety of other creative ways. When Students visit the Pi Day table they get a packet with some interesting information about Pi, the history of Pi Day, and other fun facts and photos. Mu Alpha Theta faculty advisor Deirdre Holic stated, "We want to thank those that donated pies included the New Stop and Shop in Mahopac who not only donated pies but also a $25 gift certificate that allowed us to purchase things like whipped cream and pie server utensils."

According to PiDay.Org, Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. As an irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern. While only a handful of digits are needed for typical calculations, Pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorize, and to computationally calculate more and more digits.

It is one of Math teachers' favorite days and students celebrate by having Pi Day parties. March 14 also happens to be Albert Einstein's birthday, so it is the perfect day for math challenges and math fun!
