George's Restaurant served over 90 free meals on Thanksgiving

Keeping with a nearly 30-year tradition, George’s Place in Carmel served Thanksgiving dinner to anyone who showed up at the restaurant on Thursday and even to some who didn’t – drivers were on hand to deliver meals to the homebound.

“This is Putnam County at its finest,” said County Executive MaryEllen Odell. “It’s neighbors helping neighbors and finding joy in sharing their time, effort and hearty meals with others.”

Owners Karen and Gus Pourakis continued the generous tradition started by Gus’ father, George. Together with family and friends, they cooked, served and delivered more than 90 traditional Thanksgiving Day dinners, which included soup, salad, turkey and dessert. They even provided an additional take-home bag.

Among the friends who donated their time were several Putnam County employees, including Charleen Effinger, Christina Lollo, Nancy Lynne Gagne, Sheila Barrett and Lillian Moynihan.

“It was a very wonderful day for all who were there -- customers, workers and our volunteers who offered to drive people to and from the restaurant,” Karen Pourakis said. “We’ve hosted this at the restaurant every year except last year, when we still cooked, but delivered all of the meals because of COVID.”
