Former Sandy Hook Teacher Brings Kindness Into Classrooms

In the wake of the recent school tragedy in Florida, Darien resident Kaitlin Roig-DeBellis, former first-grade teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School and founder of the nonprofit, Classes 4 Classes (C4C) is bringing kindness into schools, one classroom at a time.

DeBellis explains, “Our initiative is a simple, but powerful one, and it is for all classrooms across the United States. We challenge the students to complete the sentence: Kindness conquers...And think about a meaningful way to bring about change.”

Today, DeBellis visited Ms. Lenehan’s second-grade class at Lake Garda Elementary here in Burlington, Connecticut.

“The students in Ms. Lenehan’s class brainstormed ways that they could be kind and specifically what negative things won’t happen if you choose to be kind: ie: bullying, lying, name calling, etc.,” says DeBellis.

With this kindness initiative, DeBellis hopes to inspire all classrooms across the United States to have a conversation with their students: ‘‘How can we conquer hate? By being kind’

“We believe that when we engage our youngest students in these conversations of kindness, compassion, and empathy...there isn’t room for hate,” declares DeBellis.
