New Historic Hudson Valley Event Celebrates Suffrage and Citizenship

‘Vote Like a Girl’ debuts at Washington Irving’s Sunnyside on Saturday, July 14

Visitors can pay tribute to fearless women past and present during Vote Like a Girl at Washington Irving’s Sunnyside on Saturday, July 14, from 10am-5pm. Art activities, games, music, and a parade will highlight the day’s celebratory activities.

Visitors can explore suffrage and citizenship by making a radical cross-stitch project, decorating a Statue of Liberty crown, making postcards to send their representatives, and getting some photo-ops with suffragette sashes and 19th-century clothing. A fashion show will help kids explore how confining women’s clothing was and how that impacted daily tasks. Susan Hood, author of Shaking Things Up: 14 Young Women Who Changed the World, will read from and sign copies of her book. Music historian Linda Russell will teach suffrage songs which will be sung during a parade around the historic property.

Little scientists can test their STEM skills while honoring female inventors by experimenting with a wind tunnel, making slime, and practicing archeology techniques. Adventurous types can even build their own kite to fly in the pasture at Sunnyside.

Food and ice cream will be available for sale and there are picnic tables on site.
Tours of Irving’s historic house will be available throughout the day.
Online admission is $16 for adults; $12 for seniors; free for children under 17 and Historic Hudson Valley members. Prices are $2 more per ticket when purchased on-site or by phone.
