A celebration of Old Town Hall, chamber music for piano and strings July 8

The Cultural Arts Coalition presents: A celebration of Old Town Hall, chamber music for piano and strings

Sunday, July 8th at 5:00PM at the Studio Around the Corner

A celebration of Old Town Hall, chamber music for piano and strings. Amy Campanaro, director of the Southeast Museum, will highlight the History of Old Town Hall, and the events held in this Landmark building throughout the years.

The Piano Quintet no. 1 in A minor by Louise Dumont Farrenc will be featured, as will the theme and variation movement of Fanz Schubert’s Trout Quintet. The program will include works by Johann Sebastian Bach and the popular Italian composer, Gioachino Rossini. Jennifer Tao, piano; Robert Zubrycki, violin; Adria Benjamin, viola; Katherine Cherbas, cello and Roger Wagner, bass.

Jeanne Louise Dumont Farrenc (1804-1875) was female trailblazer, being born into a bohemian family who was open to the idea of women developing their artistic gifts. She studied piano and, unusually for a woman, composition. In 1821, at the age of seventeen, she married a flautist ten years her senior. (He later became a well-known music publisher.) Marriage didn’t interfere with her career; on the contrary, she toured throughout the 1830s, and in 1842 she was named the first woman Professor of Piano at the Paris Conservatoire. Despite this extraordinary honor, she was paid less than her male colleagues, much to her disgust. After the premiere of her nonet, she demanded that her pay be raised to be equal to that of her male colleagues’, and eventually she succeeded. Throughout the course of her professional life she wrote for both large and small ensembles, and her work was praised by none other than Robert Schumann. Her output is of extremely high quality, yet her music never became popular. Concerts Around the Corner continues in its mission of presenting women composers by performing Farrenc’s lovely first Piano Quartet.

Concerts Around the Corner features chamber music performances at the Studio Around the Corner and other local venues.
