Maloney Hosts Virtual Press Conference with Local Police and Fire Chiefs on Impact of the American Rescue Plan

 Today, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) hosted a virtual press conference with police and fire chiefs from Poughkeepsie, Beacon, Bedford and Middletown to discuss the impact of the American Rescue Plan’s state and local aid on fire and police departments in the Hudson Valley. State and local governments in New York will receive over $23 billion from the American Rescue Plan, including hundreds of millions of dollars for NY-18. This funding will help supplement revenue loss as a result of the pandemic and keep frontline heroes — like police officers and firefighters — in their jobs. 

“State and local governments across New York have been under an unprecedented strain during COVID-19. Local government has faced untenable choices, between laying off cops, firefighters and other frontline workers or failing to provide the services that our communities rely on,” said Rep. Maloney. “But help has arrived. The American Rescue Plan is sending New York state and local governments over $23 billion to offset their losses, keep cops on their beat and firefighters at the staffing levels they need to do their jobs and keep our streets and communities safe.”

The American Rescue Plan provides billions of dollars in emergency funding to New York. New York State will get $12,665,000,000, New York local government will get $10,617,000,000, and $353 million will go to NY Capital Projects.  New York will get a total of $23.8 billion to help bridge budget shortfalls, including funding to retain essential public workers, including police officers and firefighters.

In addition to the state and local funding, the American Rescue Plan provides additional funding for grant programs across America. Including:

•  Assistance to Firefighters Grants – The ARP provides a total of $100 million for Assistance to Firefighter Grants and $200 million for Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grants (SAFER) nationwide.
• Emergency Management Performance Grant – ARP provides $100 million to state and local emergency management agencies to help communities address COVID-19 and faciiitate vaccine rollout.
