Putnam officials talk Butterfield Senior Center with Philipstown Seniors

Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell and Leg. Barbara Scuccimarra met with the Philipstown Seniors Club, the Philipstown Recreation Department, and the Town of Philipstown recently to discuss potential offerings of nutrition, recreation, education and other activity programs at the new senior and community center.

“Now that the senior and community center’s opening is in view on the horizon, this meeting served as the kick-off for collaboration with the stakeholders,” said Odell. “We want to work in cooperation with the Town of Philipstown so that together we can expand the offerings currently available.  We understand that by offering these services our senior population stays healthier and live at home longer.””

Leg. Barbara Scuccimarra, who has long been an advocate for the senior center at Butterfield agreed. “This was the first of many brainstorming sessions to see what is possible,” she said. “By being able to work together with the Town of Philipstown we can ensure that we share services and fully serve a population that has been underserved for way too long.”

Michael Cunningham, Director of the Office for Senior Resources, also attended the meeting.  “We will use these coming months to create some very creative and rewarding opportunities to attract seniors to the new site,” he said.

“We are so thrilled to be part of the process,” said Donna Anderson of the Philipstown Seniors Club. “It is so nice to know that County Executive Odell and Leg. Scuccimarra want our input on what kinds of programs will be at the new senior center. Who better to ask than those of us who will be using it?”

Putnam County’s new senior center, which is in the process of being built on the property of the former Butterfield Hospital in Cold Spring will offer nutritious meal as well as companionship, nutrition education, health counseling transportation and shopping assistance.
