Valerie Henning-Piedmonte, Superintendent of the Brewster School District, has spent her career cultivating young minds and has been the catalyst for a number of success stories. At a ceremony held at Brewster High School on February 26, Senator Terrence Murphy praised Henning-Piedmonte for her many accomplishments, presenting her with a proclamation in honor of her work and in recognition of Black History Month.
"The responsibility of students becoming productive members of the community is often thrust upon the shoulders of superintendents and teachers. Valerie has stepped up to the plate at every opportunity to provide students with the tools they need for a successful life," said Senator Murphy. "Her philosophy of education embraces the growth and development of every child. We need more people like Valerie in our school system - people who are committed to making a difference in a child's life."
Henning-Piedmonte said, "Senator Murphy has always looked out for the welfare of our students. He understands our needs and puts a high premium on education. Through his efforts, he was able to obtain the seed money for several vitally needed programs in the district. When he says he is going to try to help, he follows through. This recognition means a great deal to me. Thank you, Senator Murphy, for working with me and this administration to help our children."
Many of Henning-Piedmonte's fellow administrators from the High School were on hand to congratulate her, including Principal Nichole Horler, Assistant Principal Danielle Sullivan, Victor Karlsson, Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations; Denise Harrington-Cohen, Assistant Director of Business; Kathleen Culligan, Director of Human Resources, Athletic Director Dean Berardo, and Special Education/Wrestling Coach Thomas Looby. Also present at the ceremony to receive congratulations for his own achievement was senior Grant Cuomo. Cuomo recently won the New York State 170-pound wrestling title.
Henning-Piedmonte has more than twenty-four years of experience as an educator. She was previously Middle School Principal for Uniondale High School, Reading Teacher for Dyker Heights Intermediate School, Senior Research Associate for The National Center for Restructuring Education, Schools and Teachers; Assistant Superintendent for Clarkstown Central School District, and prior to becoming Superintendent, served as Deputy Superintendent for the Brewster Central School District.
Henning-Piedmonte has a Doctorate of Education and a Master of Education from Columbia University. She has a B.A. in Business with a minor in English from Mount Mary University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
