Putnam County Leads the Way with Civics Education

The Putnam County Young Democrats have teamed up with educators to develop a series of civics classes to foster a hands-on approach to involvement in our system of self-government and promote critical thinking and crucial, civil debate.

“I think we are losing the humanity in politics and government, “Chapter President Jordan Bailey-Hoover said. “Through events like these, we want to help build a community that respects all of our neighbors and brings everyone into the conversation. It’s time we start talking with one another again and remember that the public is at the heart of public service.”

As such, the event series will be open to all, regardless of age or political affiliation.

The first of a four-class series will be held on Tuesday, April 9th at 6:30 PM at the Studio Around the Corner on 67 Main Street, Brewster. Shannon Wong, Chapter Director of the New York Civil Liberties Union in the Hudson Valley, will lead a discussion on ways to create change in our community with a focus on civil rights and liberties. She will share stories of creating change at the local and state levels. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to start thinking about ways to create change in their own community, school or workplace.
