State Police investigate serious New Year's Day crash on I-684

On January 1, 2020, the New York State Police from the Somers barracks investigated a serious personal injury motor vehicle crash on Interstate 684 in the town of Bedford.

Initial investigation found the driver, Maribel Mota, age 49, of Waterbury, CT, operating a 2019 Toyota Corolla, northbound on Interstate 684 in the area of mile marker 11.2, fell asleep while behind the wheel at approximately 11:09 a.m.  The Corolla drifted into the left guiderail then across all lanes into the right guiderail.  This caused the Corolla to spin and overturn before striking the left guiderail for a second time.

Maribel Mota and the front seat passenger Maria Mota, age 29, were secured with seatbelts, and sustained minor injuries.  Three children in the rear seats were not secured with seatbelts and sustained serious, but believed at this time to be non-life-threatening injuries.  Two of the children, a 16-year-old and an 8-year-old, were both ejected from the vehicle as it rolled both sustaining serious to critical injuries.  The 12-year-old was not ejected.

Interstate 684 was closed until approximately 2:00 p.m. while emergency services helped the victims, and the State Police processed the scene.  A detour utilizing Exit 3N for State Route 22 northbound was put in place at the time of the accident.

Bedford Fire Department, Armonk Fire Department, and Westchester Paramedics all responded to the scene to help the victims.

This remains an ongoing investigation.
