Putnam County Officials Urge Residents To Prepare For Two Weather Events 1/14/22 - 1/17/22

Putnam County Officials are monitoring two weather events that will impact our region this weekend. One will bring dangerously cold temperatures while the second event will bring a dangerous mix of wind, snow, ice and rain.

Tonight (1/14/22) into Saturday (1/15/22), we will see dangerously cold temperatures with a high that will only reach into the teens with lows in the single digits. This will be in combination with gusty winds that will create temperatures that “feel like” well below zero. While the temperatures will begin to moderate through the day Sunday, moisture is expected just after midnight. This will begin as snow but turn to ice then rain Monday morning and as the day progresses. In addition, high winds are expected with gusts up to 35 mph. The combination of snow, ice, rain and high winds will make travel extremely dangerous.

“I have spoken with Commissioner of Emergency Services, Kenneth Clair and we will continue to monitor the situation, but this is the time for residents to prepare, before the storm makes travel difficult.” said County Executive MaryEllen Odell. “We have also briefed our Incident Command Team as well as the New York State Office of Emergency Management.”

As a result of the expected inclement weather, we will be closing both COVID-19 Testing Sites on Saturday, January 15, 2022 and Monday, January 17, 2022. Both the testing site in Carmel and the site in Philipstown will be open Sunday, January 16, 2022 from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm weather permitting. Please continue to monitor our website for the latest information:

Residents are urged to ensure that they are ready.  Take time now to review your emergency plans which include; Food inventory including water and non-perishable foods; Supply of essential medications; Baby supplies including formula and diapers; Battery powered radio; Flashlights; Spare batteries; Charge cell phones; Spare fuel for snow blowers (always read and follow the manufacturer’s safety recommendations when using power equipment); Fuel up your vehicles; Have spare fuel for your generator and remember NEVER operate a generator in an enclosed space; Remember to check on vulnerable neighbors and family members.

Residents are reminded to report any outages to their local utility company.  NYSEG can be contacted at 800-572-1131. Central Hudson Gas & Electric can be contacted at 845-452-2700. Both companies have an app available for download to track outages. It is important to note that utility companies cannot operate bucket trucks in high wind situations. Residents should be prepared for possible extended outages until utility workers can safely respond.

Putnam County 9-1-1 will remain fully manned and should only be used for emergency requests for Police, Fire or EMS.
