Florida Man Facing Drug Charge in Carmel

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the arrest of a Florida man on a drug possession charge in Carmel.

At about 5:00 pm, on July 30th, Sheriff’s Deputies Keith Simone and Shane Rossiter responded to a report of a verbal dispute at the BP Gas Station located at 2 Fair Street in the Hamlet of Carmel. While conducting an investigation at the scene, Deputy Simone discovered that one of the participants in the dispute, Mr. Michael Kopilak, aged 33, a Florida resident, was in possession of the prescription drug Suboxone, for which he did not have a valid prescription.

The deputy arrested Mr. Kopilak and charged him with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree, a class A misdemeanor. The defendant was processed at the Sheriff’s Office and arraigned before the Town of Patterson Justice Court. He was ordered held in lieu of $1,500.00 cash bail or $3,000.00 bail bond and was directed to appear in the Town of Carmel Justice Court on August 8th.

If found guilty of the misdemeanor charge, the defendant could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.00.
